Abby found Daniel in the kitchen fuming.

“I had the schedule all set,” he was complaining to Bobby. “Now Georgie has added another event this evening, without even asking me? We don’t have enough food or servers, and honestly, Bobby, this may be it for me. I may quit today.”

“I can help,” Abby said.

“Who the hell are you?” Daniel said with unconcealed contempt.

Bobby, who rarely said anything, responded with such force that Daniel took a step back in surprise. Bobby’s face turned red, and he curled his hands into fists as he spoke.

“Abby owned the Macintosh Bruncherie,” he said. “She’s the best cook in this town. Better than anyone. Better than you.”

“Thanks, Bobby,” Abby said as she felt her face blush.

Daniel’s eyebrows shot up. He shook Abby’s hand and apologized for his tone.

“Daniel Rosales, I’m pleased to meet you,” he said. “I know you’re good because my old boss was so jealous that he hated you. Before this, I worked at The Curious Lentil for Miles Manly.”

“You have my deepest sympathy,” Abby said.

Bobby went back to the front desk. Daniel ran his hand through his short dark hair as he looked at the memo from Georgie. Daniel was short but still a little taller than Abby, five feet tall in her bare feet. Despite his small stature, he displayed impressively muscled forearms below his rolled back sleeves. His skin was light brown, and his eyes were dark brown. He had a prominent nose and a strong chin to balance it out. Abby thought he seemed so young, probably in his early twenties.

“If you will take care of all of this,” he said, offering Abby the memo, “And try not to get in my way while you do it, I will be eternally grateful for your help.”

Abby read the memo, which described an office holiday party featuring appetizers and pastries for ten people.

“What do you have in the way of extra provisions?” Abby asked.

Daniel took her on a tour of the butler’s pantry, plus the new shelving units, commercial fridge, and freezer installed in the utility room, and Abby was able to scavenge enough supplies for a hot spiced citrus punch, three appetizers, and two different petite pastries.

She put on an apron, rolled up her sleeves, and washed her hands.

‘Might as well hit the ground running,’ she thought.
